It is an engine idle damper. Used only on 4.0L engines. When new, it takes some of the roughness out of the lean burn 4.0L idle. After a year or two, it looses it's effectiveness slowly and you don't notice much difference. It takes a odd size star socket to remove it from the frame. It attaches to a heavy metal arm that it fastened to the side of the block near the drivers side motor mount. The bottom of the shock damper attaches to the frame rail.
Haha just kidding. Looks more like a gas shock that opens up the hatch of a minivan or a wagon! Ranger Pat is right though. It lost its effectiveness 9 or 10 years ago!
Engine vibration I can see easily...I hardly notice the engine running (except the exhaust...).
Torque on the other hand, it does zero for that, I hit the pedal and the whole truck jumps behind the engine, that makes me laugh lol.
