While I was on the road last week in Catfish, (96 awd), the shifter handle, the grip part near the end, began to feel wobbly, and then broke off. Now it's dangling by three wires. Also, the "OD OFF" light doesn't come on, though I am not sure if it is locking out OD. Is it possible the bulb failed from the trauma? Other than the wires, I don't see any other metal contacts, everything seems to be plastic.
I'm about to whip up some JB Weld and put it all back together, but suspect this may only be a temporary fix.
Has this happened to any of you guys? Does anyone know what's involved in replacing the whole shift lever once I locate one?
You can get a whole steering column from a junk yard and then use what you need. My shifter broke under the dash. I just switched out the shifter part, saved the ignition switch and turn signal switch, and tossed the rest.
If you get one from a wreck that the air bag has deployed they are pretty cheap. I paid $20.00 for the whole thing, bad bag and all.
