Having problems getting truck to start. Neccassary to cycle key 3 times then hold gas pedal to floor. Starts then and seems to run really rich, black smoke poors from exhaust.
1. Timming was checked 14 degrees advanced.
2. Test Map sensor (known good) was installed.
3. Fuel filter replaced.
4. Fuel pressure check 30-38 psi.
After engine starts and cleans out runs ok until you put in gear. Then it will idle down below 500 rpm.
The first thing I would suggest is to get a scanner/code reader and pull the codes, as well as a high impedence multi meter to check system refrence and return voltage. Here's a helpful website on EFI. www.fordfuelinjection.com Check all your sensors, switches etc to be sure they're all pluged in and no wires are burned or shorting out. Make sure all the vacuum hoses are connected and not rotten/cracked. Get a good shop manual for your year and model truck. There are a number of things that would cause it, I don't want to speculate on anything and cause you to spend money on it and not fix the problem. It could be something simple and free to fix, or cost a few hundred dollars. You'll need plenty of time and patience to become familiar with Ford efi but it's well worth it in the long run. Good luck.
when you set the timing did you remove the spout connector after the motor was warmed up good. when was it tuned up last with new plugs, wires, cap an rotor.
