fuel tank problem

I bought a used 2001 limited and the gas tank had a dent in it. When I fill the tank very full it will leak gas from the top drivers side. When the tank is 3/4 to close to full it has a fuel smell. Sometimes my fuel sender reads past full when I only fill it to 3/4 then returns to the correct place anfter a day. Are these tanks plastic or metal and how hard is it to drop the tank? What sort of return or other line should I check? Thanks JOHN

I think the tanks are plastic, but are covered my a large steel skid plate. I'll bet that somehow the tank was damaged either by an accident or maybe someone hit something. You are going to have to drop the tank and have a look at what is going on. On the top of the tanks there are a couple of fittings that could have popped off. The fuel sender, the roll over valve, and maybe the evap purge line.

I have my tank out as a matter of fact, they are plastic, they are held in by 4 bolts, heavt too, Have a floor jack, get as close to empty as you can. The tank will drop out, you will have to disconnect the fill and vent lines going to the fuel door, but the wiring for the fuel pump and the fuel lines will come down with the tank.
