What's pinging mean?

I have been letting the F-250 sit and driving my 2.9L (19.5MPG) bronco II. I drove it this weekend and it sounded like the exhaust leak came back. It seemed to lack power also. So I ran it down to 1/4 a tank and just filled it with mid-grade and now it's quieter again.

So what causes pinging? And will one tank of mid grade fix it?

Pinging is slang for predetonation, which is caused by the air/fuel mixture exploding in the cylinder prematurely, causing the pinging noise. This is very hard on the engine and should be avoided, and yes a change in fuel grade would clear it up right away.

Also this usually happens during summer months when the engines run hotter or you may have just gotten some bad gas. I'd try another tank of what you normally run from a different station. If it comes back you may need to run the next grade up for the summer.
Can be caused by something like carbon build-up on pistons. So maybe some seafoam(sp) through the fuel system might help this out. Maybe someone could post on what would work best to clean the piston heads without removal

In the past I used engine decarbonizer purchased at the local autoparts store. It's a liquid you pour down the intake (or use a vacuum hose to suck it up). Like cleaning a flat griddle with water, the heat of combustion causes the liquid to boil when it hits the metal blasting the carbon off the interior parts of the combustion chamgber.

I have also on older cars used water to do the same thing. The decarbonizer has chemicals to loosen the deposits and is a better solution (no pun intended).

I've had this problem since day one with my 02 5.4 i bought with 80K miles. i've always run mid grade (89) from the same chain of gas stations. i took it into the dealership last week and they said my "octane ratings were all over the board, so we reset them" and they cleaned my MAF sensor. it doesn't ping as bad anymore but still does in certain situations, any ideas?
