Run Chevron Delo 15w-40 oil. Its made for diesel engines and has detergents that keep your engine clean and removes the sludge as well. Works better than any high mileage oil and is cheaper. Also change your oil every 2500-3000 miles and Make sure your colling system is up to par.

Why would he want to do that. My 300 will out pull, out perform and drive circles around a 302, last twice as long between rebuilds, and get better gas milage while doing it.

There is a big reason why the 302 was only offered in a half ton truck, but the 300 was offered in everything up to an F-600.

The only advantage of a 302 over a 300, is you can go faster down the road.

------------

As for the other question, just change your oil, and do regular tune ups and you should be fine. that engine of yours should last another 100K easily. I'd like you to do that with a 302, it would be worn out by now.

Change the O2 sensor if it has one. I change mine every time I do a tune up. Good practice.

Check the state of the old plugs, they can tell you some of what is going on. Number them corosponding to what cylinder is which. Can tell you if the truck is running normal, running rich, lean, or if you are burning oil etc...

My plugs are telling me I need new valve guides for instance. Did a compression test, good compression, runs like a top, passed california smog with flying colors etc. What do you expect for an engine with 470,000 on it though.

change the oil and beat it to death and it will outlast everything else you own. ive owned a 300 with well over 300k and she still wouldnt die. the only thing it was used for was a woods truck where it saw rpms that it should have never in the mud and she wouldnt die. but be carefull not to over heat as thats what killed mine. aparently its not smart to was a radiator that all thats holding it together is mud...lol

You are insane my friend. Im so tired of people like you spreading the propaganda on this site about the 300 being some glorious thing. I have owned 3 vehicles with the 6 (76 E-150, 81 F-150, 94 F-250) All 3 were dogs that barely saw 150K, every 302 I have ever seen has gone over 200k and even a couple (including the one I replaced my six with in my 81') saw over 300,000 . All you have to do is look at the peak power ratings, numbers DONT lie. The 300 never had the torque, let alone horsepower of a 302. and GAS MILEAGE??? you would be happy to get 14 frwy with the six, my current 302 in my 81 that doesnt have the most mpg-friendly engine(.030 over, holley 600, edelbrock intake, comp 270 cam, headers) gets 18 with 3.50:1 gears. The 6 is garbage, if I have to pull your truck backwards down the street to prove it, I will.

Sorry, Racin'.....your credability is shot to hell. Your right, numbers don't lie...both 300 and 302 have the same peak torque ratings, the 6 at 1600 rpm, the 8 at 2000.
Perjury, my friend.

I've had my 300 since '83. Oh did I mention 20 mpg highway, SuperCab and long bed....heavy. Was that you I passed yesterday at the gas station?
I challenge any 302 owner to match my numbers.

The 300 does not have 305 lb.ft of torque, stock my 69' 302 does, the 300 is somewhere down around 260. You need to look up your power ratings more often, go and buy a chiltons or something. And 400 rpm is nothing my friend. As for the 20mpg, LB SC with a SIX??!!, Im afraid your credability is shot to hell, there is no way in hell thats true, especially with a carbed six and YOU know it. Tell me how my credabilitly is shot when I have had enough expirience with the six, probably more than you, to know what im talking about, the engine is garbage. Ill pull your truck backwards down the street as well.

There's so much wrong with that post I'm not even sure where to begin. I'm not sure you'd know a 300 if you saw one, never mind ever driven one. The only thing you'll be towing around with your 302 is your huge crock of ...

The guy just wanted to find out how to make his 300 last.. You can't make a 300 last longer by putting in a 302...If you do that, your cheating...
