Have a 2004, assume the 2005 is the same. Crutchfield said 6" or 6 1/2 for front door but were wrong. All three locations are 5x7/6x8. I used the better Pioneer 6x8s listed for Fords, had no depth issues (used Crutchfield wire harness adapters to speakers to save time making them up). Took about two hours to change out all six factory junk speakers. World of difference in the sound.
So I can put 6x8 in all locations? That should be step up.
Does anyone make a 6x8 sub? (for the 3rd row)
Is it a 10" factory sub?
Any tips on getting at the factory sub and replacing it?
Post-man, I used the TSA 6881 Pioneer 4 way speakers which I got on ebay new for about $50 a pair shipped. I think the seller was some kind ov an overstock dealer or something, this was half Crutchfiels's price. Door pannels were easy, if I remember, the window switch panel snaps put revealing a screw and there is another screw beneith the red lense at the panel bottom. The rear panels for the third set of speaker take a while to remove. You have to start at the rear and I was able to change speakers by moving panels without removing shoulder belts.
ymmv - I wasn't aware that there was any option for a factory sub on the Ex. I don't think subs come in 6x8, only rounds. I don't use one, but with my Pioner head unit i can get plenty of bass with the TSA speakers.
Bucky .. thanks for details on Pioneer speakers ...
It sounds like you replaced the stock radio/cd player with a Pioneer as well, what did you choose and do you have pix ... I'm wondering if I can get a unit that looks good in the old space ... any video in that unit?
I have a Pioneer double din FHP 5000 (I think thats the model) that is about three years old in the dash, think it looks great. It is single CD and cassett with a Sirius unit attached (hidden). It is not a video unit, but I have seen Pioneer has a few double din video units that would fit in the same space. Minor mods to dash face and a simple mounting kit are all that's needed to fit the double din. There are pics. in my gallery.
Thanks again Bucky ... the unit looks good .. also just ordered the Pioneer 4 way speakers from ebay for about $66 including shipping .. starting with 2 and i'll go from there ..
I too would like more info on this. I'm not interested in swapping out my head unit..but speakers I would consider.
I tried changing the speakers in my previous 2002 Mustang GT and noticed no sound difference. At least in the MAch 460 system that the '02, and my current '03 Cobra has...there is some (geez, wish I could exaclty remember) impedence mismatch or something that prevent any better sound from better speakers with the factory head unit. If memory serves me, after market speakers are 4ohm, and factory ones are 2ohm.
In the case of most current model Fords, I noticed on some Web sites, the given product was described as "direct replacement for Ford/Mazda." eg. the Pioneer speakers mentioned on this thread.
It's unlikely, but some Japanese-make cars do have different impedance systems. Worse still, in some German-make cars, eg. Porsche, there's an active cross-over (Bose) so just pulling the speakers confuses the cross-over and the head unit doesn't have a conventional line-out so unless you buy the rest of the "bus" based system (MOST?) you end up pulling the whole deal out and ignoring the factory wiring rather than figure out where the speaker wiring goes (usually under the passenger seat.)
Anywho, if you just want better sound, I'd suggest upgrading the front doors first. If you really like the speaker you choose, get another pair for the second row doors. I'd suggest just a 6x8 component woofer if anything for the third row. You won't hear low frequency timing distortion but the upper frequencies will exhibit the "loud but not clear" noises of the existing factory system -- at least in the Limited, it has a lot of speakers, a lot of bass and a very noisy, confused "sound stage." I find if you just unplug the 3rd row things seem cleaner, plus there's maybe better power delivery to at least the 2nd row (assuming the 2nd and 3rd row pairs are in parallel.)
From what little research I've done thus far (without even checking the available space behind/around the door pockets) I like the idea of putting in a plain, round 6" or 6.5" in the doors and tweets on the dash. I'd copy that in the second doors with the tweeters aimed backwards (away from the front row, to avoid timing problems) and the same rounds again in the third row or use the third row enclosures to build subs into boxes if there's space.
I know someone said they have their X apart getting an all-black treatment done. A few pics of that car gutted would be very handy.
ymmv ... good suggestions ... in fact I'm doing just as you mentioned with the Pioneer replacement speakers Bucky suggested ... starting in the front only ...
Also, I like the idea of disconnecting the 3rd row to clean up the sound a bit .. what's involved in getting to those speakers as I rarely go back there?

Someone else already explained (this thread or another?) how to unclip the rear trim just enough (without removing seat belts) to get at the speakers. If you have skin on your knuckles, this will change all that ...
I have a Husky tool drawer in there, so it was a chore. I removed the 3rd row seat, spare and tool box. Probably could have done less work, but better than breaking a clip or ending up with a bent bit of plastic trim that never sits flat again. Lots of wasted space back there. I still need to get in there and see if I can shape some styrofoam to fit a decent sub box in there somehow. No time ... shouldn't be reading forums either! : )
To get to the third row speakers (which are just behind the side rear doors) you start at the hatch, remove the sill and the spare and the spare holder and then the side rear door thresholds and maybe even the trim around the long rear side windows and can finally lossen the large side interior panels and move them in enough to get to speakers without taking seat belts out. Takes longer than changing all 4 doors. I feel that the third row adds to the depth of the bass inside that hugh box we all love to drive.
