I have a 2000 Ranger with the 4.0L OHV and a 5-speed tranny. I got gas yesterday at the station I always use and then hit the highway. I set the cruise at 70 in 5th gear and was just cruising along when the truck started bucking like the engine was cutting out. It did this for a good 15 or 20 seconds till I turned off the cruise. It was then fine. I reset the cruise, and it hasn't acted up again. Any ideas?
Sounds like water in the gas. Do you live some where where they have been having a lot of rain and maybe some flooding like we have been having. Also I have a rule I never buy gas at station where the transport is unloading fuel it stirs up all sorts of crud/water in the tanks. Now that doens't mean that they just didn't leave before you got there. I would run a bottle of heet or its equal in a tank of gas just to clean up any thing that might still be in there.
No flooding and just your normal spring rains. I got the gas at around midnight so I'm pretty sure it had been a while since a transport had been there. I'll run some heet through it to be safe. Thanks.Stacy
You may have gotten gas that was a new blend with Ethanol in it. May was the start of the new fuel blends for summer. With gasoline there is usually at least 5 % water in the fuel which is usually at the bottom of the storage tanks. With Ethanol being added to gasoline it may actually be causing the water to be pump out of the storage tanks with the gas. Most gas stations are not following the correct procedure when refilling the tanks with the new summer blend. The storage tanks need to be cleaned and all old gasoline and water removed.
