I have a 77 302 unknown but high mileage and when I hold a steady ~3000 rpm I hear what I *THINK* is pretty bad timing chain noise. Not really a grind or a rattle, hard to explain just "rrrrrrrrrrrrr". It only makes the noise when holding steady, and not when increasing or decreasing rpm and is coming from the waterpump/timing cover area. It does this while driving or sitting still. I haven't checked the water pump yet but I have heard that sound before and this is different.
I just changed the timing chain and gears on my 77 302 w/ 113,000 miles on it and it sure needed it. The cam gear was the nylon coated steel kind and it was completely chewed up and had ~ 1" of side-to-side play in the chain. I later found that these nylon timing set gears should be changed after ~85,000 miles, so you are probably right to suspect the the timing set. I have a new Cloyes all steel stock type timing set for a 302 I could sell you for $15 + shipping if you are interested.
I have taken apart a couple of higher mileage SBF's and found timing chain stretch to the point of the chain rubbing on the oil deflector that protrudes out from the inside of the cover, in between the gears. What is amazing to me is that no one includes timing chain replacement as part of their vehicle upkeep. Anytime after 50-60k is probably not too early.

That's what I think is happening too. What are the chances of me needing a new timing cover because the chain has worn into the deflector?

Thanks, but I think I'll go with a double roller set instead.
.... adding to parts list.... timing set... gaskets... might as well change the water pump while it's off... those belts are looking old... that radiator hose is starting to swell... guess I should flush the coolant system since I have to drain it... Well, my Saturday is planned !!!! he he
You shouldn't need a new cover unless it has wore thru(unlikely). For a gear to gear set-up, most of that deflector is ground off for the dual idler gears to fit under the cover.
