F-1 Door Hinges

Two weeks ago or so I posted a thread asking for advice on removing the door hinges on a '48 F-1 to install a new rear view mirror. The advice I got was very informational, but the general consensus was to leave it alone, and to remove the hinges would require some major pounding, and some paint damage unless of course I removed the door from the screws and went to town on the hinges from a vice (and even then some paint damage would probably result). Someone else said if I drilled from the top of the pin down about 1/4 inch and then pounded up the pin would collapse on itself and come free. i don't doubt the effectiveness of this technique, but it really was a "point of no return" solution.
Well I just about gave up on installing that mirror when I stumbled on a "Bob Drake" catalogue with an offering for a "hinge pin puller" on sale for $18.00 !!! What the heck, for $18.00 it's worth a try!!! I will keep you folks updated as to the effectiveness of this wonder tool, unless of course anyone has already bought one of these things and can tell me if I am wasting my money or not!!!!!!
Thanks again for everyone's help!!!!

Yes, it's pretty much a waste of money. I bought one of those years ago and tried using it but it did not get the hinge pins out. I still have it. You can have it cheap...

I, too have heard they are a waste of money. I saw the thing once and determined they weren't worth flip. The type of thing I could LOOK at and bend as my boys are prone to say!

Vern,
jreilly may have a chance. He is in sunny California while you are in Northern N.H. I live in Maine but my 49 I drove back from Ca. in the 70's. When a non car friend stopped the other day and was looking at my 49, he said how come I can't see thru the frame. I said, one word, California!

It still rains in California. Fifty or so years of rain would still rust "weld" those pins in place. I dread the day that I have to remove the pins from my doors. Lucky for you truck guys, you only have to remove four of them. On Panels, I have an additional four!!

I'venever heard tell of the tool working. I imagine it must have at some time or they wouldn't still make them. I've seen pics of a similar tool in old Ford repair manuals.

Keep us posted, I'll keep my fingers crossed

I tried to use the one I bought several years ago the other day for the first time. It was also from B. Drake. I ended up thowing it in the trash. The bolt you turn to force the pins up bent. And then the pin bent. JUNK! Now I guess I'm going to have to Heat the hinge up and try driving the pin out with a punch. Luckly I'm just starting a restoration.
