I don't have the DOHC 2.3L... But, I've heard that you shouldn't expect your full potential of gas mileage until you hit around 5xxx miles. At that time, I would expect a consistent 23-26 intown gas mileage and up to 30 on the highway. I have a slightly aging Ranger with the 2.5Lima and I love it. Power is decent and gas mileage is great compared to what I was getting out of my full-size Chevy. The good about the new Rangers, imho, is the looks and surprising functionality you'll find even though you have just a 4banger. These things are deceptive.
Welcome to the Ranger forum.
Btw, the 4 Cylinder Forum is pretty dead. The Ranger forum is full of life.
I see that, I'm two pages down in one day. I had a '99 w/the 2.5 Lima, and I loved it and had no problems with it. I have noticed that it takes a while for Ford engines to break in and live up to their potential. It does have more power than my old 2.5, and it is smooth.
Thanks for the reply, I think I'll like it here. I post very irregularly as I travel for work a lot, but I'll try to do my part.
We don't allow no stinken 4 banger ranger people here !! JUST KIDDING!! Wecome, were glad to have you!!!! My son has an 04 with the duratec 2.3, and he loves it, it's an automatic, and he gets 25 city, 30 highway. I have a 06 focus (I HAVE A 4.0 RANGER AS WELL) anyway my focus has the dutatec 2.0, it flys, and great on gas. These duratec 4's have a lot of potential, cosworth is makeing all kinds of high performance parts for them, there's also turbo kits out. I had an 02 dutatec ranger with a 5-speed as a loaner for a couple of days while my 01 lima ranger was in the shop. I couldn't get over how peppy it was, it was like driveing a little sports car. I think you'll like it, It's great to have you here, the guy's here are great, and very helpfull.
I have a 4.0L, but all I hear about the four banger is reliability and durability. It just keeps goin'! Handyman on this forum has got 318K at last check on his!!!
A lot of good information on the duratec 2.3 are on the focus forums, two of the best are focusfanatics.com, and focaljet.com. Focussport.com has the turbo kits, and other performace products. Cosworth.com has stage 1 thruogh stage 3 bolt on kits to give you up to 240 hp with out forced induction. This should be enough to get you drowling for now.
I did my first fillup today at 475 miles. It took 16 gallons to fill, thus about 29 mpg and some change for the first tank. If I gain the usual 1-2 mpg as it breaks in like I usually have, I'm gonna be very happy with this truck. The first tank was about an even split of highway and stop and go local stuff.
5-speed, I like to row my own. The last 5 vehicles have been 5 speeds. I will definitely keep a close eye on the mileage, as that's why I traded in the first place. As she breaks in, I'll try a few things to boost mileage. My first is usually the K&N filter, mostly because for $14 I can buy a cleaning kit, and clean my filter about 5 or 6 times. Just one paper filter almost costs that much. If it flows better, then that's a plus. An exhaust is probably somewhere in the future, but a very conservative one.
My dad got them for all three of our trucks. We are very very easy with the oil. No problems with them as of yet.
Speaking of which, anyone know how the filter meter thing on the Chevy trucks works? Tells you when the filter is getting clogged, etc.
I think it just works on a pre programmed database, based on your driving habits and number of miles driven being only a couple of variables it uses. Same way with the oil life indicators. They don't monitor the condition of the oil, they just monitor your driving habits, and use a table of pre programmed info to determine if your driving style is "normal" or "severe" duty, and alerts you accordingly.
Or, I may be way off base, and you should just ignore me, I'm used to it.
