I recently bought a 71 F-100. The guy I bought it from told me that it had a 390. The VIN has a Y, the air cleaner says 360, but the valve cover has a decal that says 390.
Any suggestions how I might find out whether the engine was swapped?
Dan the 360 is a detuned 390 for early emissions. It is a 390 bore with a 352 crank. Grab a piece of white jacketed house wire about 8" long and with a bud and a sharpie drop the wire in one of the front cylinders through the sparkplug hole. Have the bud rotate the engine with a socket on one of the pullys while you have the sharpie resting against the manifold and on the wire. Rotate the engine a couple of rounds and then measure the length of the wire. Report the length back here and we can tell what engine that you really have.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Just for the record, the guy that I bought it from didn't seem too sure either. He said that he had been told it was a 390 and literally said that it was either a 360 or 390. I don't really mean to sound like I was scammed.
I just wanted a half ton Ford with an automatic and a V-8 so it didn't matter much to me.
