So if I were a supporter, there would be absolutely NO ads anywhere on the site for me to see? That could be too much of a culture shock. I may go into some kind of epileptic siezure. I would love to be a supporter, I just have to talk my wife into giving me moeny for something she thinks I should be able to get over. Well, if there truly are no ads, I will try extra hard to get the money from my wife, I may even try to hold out on nookie until she caves.........there's a battle no man can win. wish me luck.
i hate the adds, especially in treads like helifixers current one in personal user announcements... but i know $$$$ make this place work. i owe this place alot so if someone can point me to getting a supporter deal, i have my credit card in hand. i managed to catch up on it from the insurance issue we had where i had to pay for it out of pocket. i'd like to become a supporter now because this place saved me recently & i need to do this. plus i hope i won't see the adds(selfish sob)
carl
personally, I don't mind ads, I know you need to pay for server space and bandwidth somehow, but the inline-reply ads are going a little far. It's pretty darn annoying.
If you use Firefox and the Adblock extention instead of Internet Explorer, the in-post ads show up as a blank posts (no text) and the side banners do not appear. IMO, this is the best of both worlds... the "ad" is only midly obtrusive to me (white space... I have to scroll a bit further) and FTE still gets their money from the companies. The only thing on my side banner is the list of sponsors in blue text (it's part of the website), no flashy ads. I'm all for advertisements. how else are companies suppose to get their name out? However, when I go to buy something, I research it extensively before purchasing so ads rarely get my support anyway... Just my $.02
I have no problem with the ads in the margins or at the top of the page but there is no reason for them to be inserted into threads. It really annoys me when I post a question or try to help someone out and I get an email notification of new responses only to find out its an ad.
All I'll say is, I've NEVER seen a message board in my life with so many ads as there are here now. There are flashing ads at the top, bottem, sides, in the thread listings and then also in the actual threads themselves. Its friggin wild. I certainly don't spend much time on here anymore because they give me a headache. Obviously, all you have to do is pay your membership (which I did for several years) but I would think for a new person coming in all those ads might deter them from hanging around right out of the gate.
By the way, this is just a simple observation, not a complaint
i'm in no way advocating supportership, or any other $$ expenditure. i did it 'cause of the support i've gotten from this place. i do think the blue tag next to my name is cool , but forget the adds. concentrate on the substance of the threads
To everyone (who does not have a supporter link) bitchin moaning and complaining.
feel free to price this out: straight from the Master
Also, almost forgot... between all these servers we're pushing out well over a terabyte per month of bandwidth (and that's a very conservative estimate). Our daily log files are probably larger than the actual monthly bandwidth of most forums.
The images and ads servers are hosted in house, on 2 T1s.
The FTE web/database servers are in a hosting facility down town... they use about as much bandwidth as an additional 2-3 T1s, depending on load.
I used to work for an ISP Full t1's ARE NOT CHEAP and then you gotta pay for the loop to the telco. Colo's at a quality ISP arn't cheap either, but feel free to price it out

The mention of AD's (short for Advertisement) has been around for over a year when Ken downsized a tedious and costly source of income to concentrate more on user needs and benefits.
Thus a new and comprehensive ClubFTE with tons of features available for a minimul fee.
It is well know by long time users that when as an Administrator I was instrumental in encouraging the ClubFTE membership to increase its numbers to try and help offset costs for FTE to function at even a higher level.
FTE is HUGE and requires vast resources that are unheard of in piddily little forums.
I can't get really into it but Everyone on FTE has benefited by a great deal by Ken & Peggy's gift to users of having a basically Free web site worth thousands of dollars of Vehicle Service costs to go to for advice.
I think we should be glad that we have these generous people at FTE to accomodate us.
No one likes to be bombarded with ad's. Lord knows by the end of the night I'm about ready to reach through the phone and slap the next telemarketer that calls my house. BUT, As for this site, Like many have said already, I have gotten way to much out of it to complain about looking at the ad's. I think of all the money I saved by not having to go to a mechanic to fix something or find out how to do it or if something wil fit or...... you get the point. Everything has gotten so expensive these days including building and running a website especially one of good quality, so Let them come as long as the fundemental quality of FTE doesnt change I can live with it.

When google first started displaying ad's they were in the form of a post. I believe it would even say "google" as the user name.
