We have a 98 Expedition 5.4L 4wd AT that we purchased used recently with approximately 93k. We've started to pick up a squeeling sound from the engine anytime the engine is accelerated beyond 2000 RPM. After reading the Haynes manual, I'm suspecting the serpentine belt.
A suggestion someone gave me was to apply belt dressing to the serpentine belt. If it stops the sound, then you know that you need to replace the belt. If not, you probably have a more expensive repair on your hands.
I've searched the forums to look for suggestions. Several people suggested having a 1/2 breaker bar to adjust the tensioner and to look at the tensioner wear indicator prior to stating the job.
Any preferences on belt manufacturer?
Are there any specialized tools that are required or suggested?
Any other reasonable things to fix or perform at the same time?
How long would it take a reasonable DIY'er with reasonable tools?
You might consider replacing the Idler pulley when you change your belt---the bearings in them aren't beefy enough---Squeals on my truck were caused by the pulley--not the belt---but if your belt is orig it needs to be replaced anyway. But I've not had serpentine belts make the noise old V belts made
