metal????? mine are factort tt mirrors and there is no metal on the outside of them except for the chrome covers.no paint either. it is just black plastic..
I see the metal bars on a lot of passing Super Duty's mirrors. It looks like a common problem. I would definitely paint them or maybe consider power coat.
Must be some realy early build or something. I looked at your gallery and still can't tell that the mirrors have any metal parts. They look just like mine which are all plastic.
The adjustable parallel arms that support the mirror head are aluminum that is powdercoated, or maybe just thick textured paint. The coating started to peel on my '00. I was going to touch them up with some black paint but I traded it before I did.
Those who think you have plastic arms that support the mirror... scratch off some of the paint and you'll see that they're metal. If you've never had the mirrors off... they're pretty heavy. They have a full metal support structure inside, as well as the metal structure underneath where it mounts to the door. I guess Ford figured that plastic wouldn't be good enough to hold up to that weight and stress of them hanging out there. I for one am glad they're metal.
The lower arm on my passenger side mirror has a small spot on the front bottom of it, maybe the size of a nickel, where the paint's chipped or peeled off. I don't really notice it much but I suppose I'll just use a little black paint to touch it up someday...
