Yet another 4X4 question

My 4 wheel drive on my 98 F150 hasnt worked for a couple years now so I finally decided to have it checked out. The guy I took it to has been a very reliable mechanic for my father for a few years so I trust what he says but I wanted to get a second opinion from you guys. He run some tests with some sort of electrical tester and told me he is sure its the transfer case shift motor and also the GEM module. Have you guys heard of this going bad before? When the 4wd first went out the 4x4 light would still come on when turning the **** but now the light wont come on at all. Oh by the way....he also told me that ity would cost me $500 to fix it,which I thought was reasonable.

500 bucks sounds pretty good to have 4x4 working again!
