fuel gauge?

I was driving to work friday and had about a 1/4 tank of fuel when I looked down at my fuel gauge and it was bouncing between a 1/4 and full at a fast rate so I stoped and put $20.00 in, just in case it went completly dead.Anybody else have this happen? I don't have a ford manual yet and was thinking mabe a bad ground. The other gauges seem to work good and no other electrical problems.mabe the sender is on its way out? 93 EB 5.8 thanks in advance for anybody that replies.

I have'nt had that happen but the Broncos fuel gage has always had an electrical problem.Mine will show half a tank then next its almost on empty then if you turn the truck off then on again its back at half where it should be.

Mine stays way past full all the time. I wish the tank did. I am assuming sending unit. I just go by my odometer...

You may have a frayed wire or bad connection somewhere, or the sender is defective.

You can check the wire and connections without much problem, but replacing the sender is a real PITA. I'd just go by the miles, and when the fuel pump dies, replace the complete unit. Alternatively, you can just replace the complete unit (sender & fuel pump) right now. However, you should verify the wiring and connections before doing anything with the sender.

Most electric fuel pumps will die between 100k and 200k, and I think with a '93, you are probably in that range.

The truck is getting close to 80,000 miles and is almost mint but every ford truck I have had has had some sort of problem with the fuel gauge at some point. After I put in the extra $20.00 in gas the gauge stopped bouncing around and it looks to be reading correctly.I am not very familiar with the 87 to 96 ford trucks or broncos yet but learing more about them, this is the newest ford truck and the cleanest ford truck I have ever owned so what ever it needs I will fix now.I noticed that my temp gauge only moves up to the first line so mabe it is a ground or that sender is bad.can some one tell me where the ground strap is that goes from the fire wall to the motor on the 5.8 I didn't see it when I looked for it.I really need to get a factory manual for it but keep getting outbid on ebay or they want to much $ for it ,thanks again Glenn

I have been using the mileage method, but I am not 100% sure of the size of my tank. 87 EB... Is it 32 gallons?

It's possible that the fuel gauge doesn't read correctly only in a certain range, most likely somewhere in the middle. I'd just get a 5 gallon can of gasoline, put it in the back, and drive until the tank is nearly empty, and see how the fuel gauge behaves.
