My "new" 72 F250 mud truck is not charging the battery. The auto parts store tested my old alternator as bad. I bought a new one that looked identical. I pulled off two wires from the back of the alternator when I removed it. When I went to hook it back up, I couldn't remember which wire went where. There is a red and black stud on the alternator. I also have a red and black wire. Sounds too easy doesn't it? Wrong! The red wire is a push on connector that will not fit on the red capped alternator stud. The black wire has a ring terminal that will go on either black or red capped stud. Common sense says red to red, and black to black. The red cap is just too small for the red stud. The alternator studs are not labeled, just red and black. I do have 12v on the black wire coming from the battery, and the red wire goes to the voltage regulator. Is the red stud indicating 12v, and I need to hook the black wire to the red stud? The engine is a 460 supposedly out of a special order 73 Galaxy that was transplanted many years ago. Which wire goes where????????
Also I only have two wires going to the alternator. Shouldn't there be three?
Hi, the large stud is the output to the battery. The back of the alternator should have the connectors labeled. The F or field terminal goes to the field connector on the voltage regulator. The Gnd or ground terminal goes to ground. Sounds like this is the one someone left off. The last connector is the Sta or stator. It is at the top rear of the alternator. It is normally not used, can be used on a electric choke. Also, the ground connector is not isolated from the case.
