Angry confusion

so i just got a T-10 borg warner transmission for my 312 Y block, and im wondering if all Pilot Bearings are the same? cause the T-10 is about a 1\2 short of fitting perfectly. it matches the bell housing and the splines are the same. i used to have a 3 sp with overdrive before. if that helps at all. so please if you have any information or even things to try, it would help tons.

Do you mean your input shaft is 1/2 inch short or the overall trans?

Let me add more confusion. I think I might have had the same problem back in the 60's with my 292 Y block. The input shaft on the full sycro 3 speed tranny I was installing was too long, by about 1/2". I man handled the tranny inplace, bench pressed it, twice, and came up 1/2 short both times of fitting flush with the bell housing. My fix as a 16 year old was to grind off the extra length from the input shaft. Get this. I grabbed the tranny like a slick pig and held the tranny up to a bench grinder to remove the extra length of the input shaft. That took two beers. I did the install in the driveway in 15 deg. weather with a kerosene space heater blowing on me from about 2 feet away.
So, look at the input shaft length for the problem.
Wow, my first car, a 1961 Ford Starliner. Sniff, sniff.

As long as you don't get metal shavings in places they shouldn't be, I guess there's no harm in grinding the excess off. Although I'm laughing at this picture - you with a tranny under one arm holding it up to a bench grinder, with a Bud in the other hand.

Smile

AndyM, glad to put a smile on your face, but it does take all of two hands to get the tranny in that head lock. If someone does resort to use this move, try not to get the shaft too hot. I kept cooling the shaft down with water. I bet the bench grinder would have been lighter to get in the head lock, but I might have been too primed for the job to think of it at that time. A die grinder with a cutoff disk would work now a days. Had to use the tools at hand back then.

Input shaft too long....

--cut off as suggested, but measure things and make sure you are still going to be able to engage the pilot bushing and the splines will line up with the clutch.

--make a spacer (adaptor as they are called when you pay $150 for one) to space your trans back from the bell. Again, measure etc.

This is a problem with T5s and the "adaptor" spaces it back so it will fit the old style bell.

There may be a different depth bell available, but that might require a good bit of luck to find.....
