help with gear code

I'm currently trying to install a 4" skyjacker suspension lift with skyjacker shocks. I have a 2000 Excursion. I'm not sure what gears I have, but I have a RC27 code on my door. I assume it is for 3.73, but can someone help decifer this code for me? I also have 18 inch Mazzi wheels and want to put new tires on. I don't know what size my gears can support, but I'd like a 35 or 37 inch tire. I'd appreciate any help with the decoding and tire sizing. I've seen the tire size formula, but don't know what gears I currently have.

Never seen a "RC27" axle code. Here's a link to the axle codes:

If you have a PSD X, you have 3.73 gears. That is all Ford ever put in.

There's a tag next to the diff cover on your front axle that indicates what gears you have. Post back if you need help decifering it

I doubt you'll be able to fit 37's with a 4" lift unless you do a lot of cutting. 35's should fit fine. I installed 37's on my 2001 PSD X (7" lift with some minor trimming of the lower valance) and replaced the gears with 4.56's and I'm very pleased with the setup. If you're going to use this vehicle like a truck, I personally feel that it was geared too high with 3.73 gears from the factory with the stock tires (geared more towards highway driving -- typical soccer Mom type stuff). The combination of 37" tires and 4.56 gears feels just right to me. I do everyday driving (including highway) and tow my boat and vehicles through mountain roads.

There should be a tag right on the diff.
