help with escort

I have a 96 escort with the 1.9 engine. I am getting a knocking noise from down by the timing belt. wondering if it could be the woter pump. anyone have any experience wuth these engines? thanks.

Rarely to water pumps knock when they go bad. Sometimes they leak or somtimes they may squeel

Doesn't sound like a waterpump to me. Does it knock while driving, when stopped, in nuetral or always? How many miles on the belt. Recomended belt change interval is either 50 or 60K.
