The heads are done and bolted back on the motor, and the intake is bolted on. Just got the rocker assemblies bolted back on, going to go adjust them now. Should be able to fire it tomorrow or monday.
Wish me luck!
Edit: Oh, I went with the Performer RPM intake. I had the heads done, and didn't want to screw around with porting the Streetmaster just yet. A better job is done when I'm not rushed.
No I did not. This is per Barry's recommendation. I'm sure it would have been fine, but at some point the engine RPM is going to go sky high (probably involuntarily). I'd like to not have it blow up at that point, although it probably will anyway with my luck the way it isn't. Error on the side of caution and all that.
Anyway, something just clicked that told me "time to give it up for the day." Usually when that happens mistakes are not too far behind. But the valve covers are on, and I got everything done today that I wanted to get done today. So it's close.
Glad to hear you got to where you wanted to today. Yes I agree with you usually when I start pushing it pushes back and bad stuff happens. I know you dont like to exceed 5k but that involuntary thing is always in your thoughts. Glad its coming together like you want it to. Charles
Rusty, did you have the .020 head gaskets before? What kind of gasket did you use this time. How much difference will it make in your compression ratio? Also what kind of carb are you running? Glad to hear that you are getting your motor back together.
Hope all goes ok.
Oh, this is the 390 in my truck. Long story short, the first time I built it the machine shop left some guides too loose. So it burned oil. So I took the heads off (burned oil on back of intake valves confirms my suspicion), and have them put all new valve guides in. I also took them the all new set of valves I got. Put 'em back together. Truck goes about 200 yards and an exhaust valve sticks in it's guide. So I pull the heads again, and have the machine shop ream 'em out a little, get a couple new valves and a new pushrod. I checked the actual clearances with a micrometer this time, and just got it back together.
I'm so sick of pulling heads off of this thing.
Oh, and to anyone reading this: ALWAYS double check ALL your machine work!!! Do not assume your machine shop knows a flippin' thing about FE's, even if they have one there!
Got it all back together today. Fired right up tonight, right after the carb filled with fuel. I soooo want to go drive this thing again.
Now on to getting the rest of the truck road-worthy again. I have the seat out, as well as most of the rest of the interior. Multiple rust holes need to be fixed, etc. I might drive it down the road about a mile sitting on the egg crate to make sure the motor is going to run.
My brother supposedly knows of a good machine shop down in Des Moines. I'll probably be taking my stuff down there from now on.
