Timing problem
Trying to set the timing on my '86 f150 5.0. First off, the timing mark doesn't come anywhere near where it's supposed to. With the timing light, I can see it from underneath the car, but not above, where it's supposed to be.
Then, after disconnecting the spout and messing with the distributor postition a bit, I finally get what seems like good timing, (I have an engine vacuum gauge and the needle is steady in the green "normal" zone) I reconnect the spout and get a problem with the rpms sweeping low and high.
The truck didn't pass smog because of a couple of vacuum hoses (I reconnected them) and the timing was at 17 degrees. Will it pass smog without the spout connected, or do I have to put it back, and if so, anybody have any ideas as to what may be causing the sweeping rpm's?
Any help is appreciated, thanks.
I don't know if you will pass emissions with the sprout unplugged. I would doubt it, though.
I have an 86 F-150 w/ 5.0 and the idle surges like you describe. The IAC motor could be the culprit. I have removed and cleaned mine a couple of times and it seemed to help for awhile. But, it always seems to go back to surging.
