Hey Guys
Have any of you ever used an air conditioning compressor for an air compressor on your truck. I have heard of this and figured it might be nice to have on one of my trucks. Then you would have the electric clutch to operate the start stop on the compressor maybe an onboard tank and a pressure relief valve of some sort. Any suggestions as to how the would be done? Any safety issues? Can you use the ford compressors as originally I heard that the old Chrysler ones were the ones to use.
Have a great day
Hey Guys
I just figured it would be nice to have air on board if it wasn't to much trouble, rather than dragging a compressor around or an air tank. I saw one guy who had modified his rear bumber and that was his air tank just put the air hose on to that. This was when we were hunting in the bush and it sure was nice when someone popped a tire on the ATV.
I don't think you could use an A/C compressor for air since it doesn't suck air in as it is a closed system. If you want an air compressor steal one off a 3 ton truck with air brakes. Most trucks used the same engine families as the light duty trucks shouldn't have a problem mounting it.
I have an antique tire pump kit. You remove a spark plug and attach the pump kit to that cyl. and run the motor and it pumps up your tire. I don't use it anymore. It is old and still in the metal box it came with. That reminds me I have to look for it I have not seen it in years. I hope no one has walked off with it.
Hey Guys
I spoke to a couple of mechanics here at work about that and they felt it would work but not for very long as the oil for the compessor is in the freon and very little oil in a sump. Maybe thats why when I was told about this the guy said to use the old chrysler ones maybe the had more of a sump on them.
most people use a york style comp. the reason is that it has a crankcase that hols about 10 oz of oil. these comp. where used on everything from ford trucks and cars to kenworths. there all kinds of ones in wreaking yards and you can buy a new one for about 300 dollars. i have not wired my comp. in yet but if you look at my gallery you can see how i have mounted the comp. on my truck
