Niece just came in from out of state. 1997 4x4 Explorer -121 thousand on the ticker.
I just finished driving it, trans fluid is good & full but I about laughed my rear off when I heard it. As soon as you release the cruise control or lift the throttle you can hear this whirring sound.....eeerreerreerrrr.... like a ball bearing & air gun effect.
Converter? I have never experienced any noise like this one and it drives fine....Any ideas welcome.
Okay...I have one idea from a friend of mine, coast clutch is bad. I've never heard this sound before but it sure has me puzzled. Funniest noise I ever have heard from a vehicle.....maybe possessed?
i was talking to a guy who supposidly cooked his tranny the overdrive I think and all he did was install a huge oil cooler on top of all factory one i think and his tranny is doing just fine in all gears he said
Also check the 4x4 shift motor. I had it fail on me when driving parkway and had same noise when let off gas. Just so you know, the shift motor fails to 4x4 Low. Leads to an expensive repair. Very expensive.
