Believable story...?

Howdy folks. Listen to this one. I'm not doubting it, but it sounds pretty wild!

My buddy bought a brush guard off a guy who had a 01 F-350 SRW, 7.3 auto 4wd. He was telling us a story about how he had to deliver a Cat Bulldozer to a fella about 50 miles away. On his way there, he stopped at a weigh station to weigh the trailor/dozer just for laughs. He said that the scales said almost 22,000 lbs.

Is that believable? I know Fords are tough, but DAMN! Especially with a SRW truck. What do you guys think? Is it possible?

Yeah it's possible. I rode in a 2003 (?) f150 2wd 5.4 auto that was towing a Toyota pick up box converted into a trailer. Both the Ford and the trailer were loaded with busted up concrete. We stopped at a closed scale, 2,700 lbs on the front axle, 8,800 lbs on the rear and 6,000 lbs on the trailer. Yep that's 17,500! The guy driving didn't go over 25 mph and it was on a pretty straight level road. Total distance was about 8 miles.

I'm not saying this was safe what so ever, and I would never do it to my truck.

BTW the truck was just a few days away from getting repo-ed and it was totally beat anyhow. It had been rear ended and jumped etc.

The smallest Caterpillar dozers are the D3 and D4, and they are both around 18,000 lbs.. Yes, any large heavy duty pickup would do that for a while, but the risk of causing damage to the drivetrain is high. Not to mention being a safety risk.

I had a '94 F150 Supercab Flareside w/ the auto tranny and the 351 in it. I regulary hauled (3 times a month) 60 bags (50# each) of horse feed. Only had 12 mile drive but it was basically up hill from the delivery truck to the Ranch.

I did have spring overload shocks on the rear. Many ppl told me it can't be done, but were suprised at the way it was able to do it.

my boss in my construction job a long time ago hauled some little bulldozer(case?) he tipped the scales at something like 18k lbs. he had an 80's something 1 ton chevy. he routinly towed a 555 ford around. needless to say, the frame broke, back in the rear part a couple of months later(after years of use). he then upgraded to a 2 1/2 ton truck for his backhoe business.

Yeah you can tow just about anything with any vehicle, but safety and longevity are at risk.

I once pushed a 30 foot motor home uphill with my 74 Datsun 4 banger pickup. Probably not wise but it worked.

I read about a guy who got a ticket towing a small travel trailer, with his Honda Motorcycle.

My favorite overloaded pickup experience was watching a guy go up the Grapevine in So Ca with a beater 1/2 ton pickup loaded to over the cab with water melons, he had plywood side boards. That guy was dragging his tail, but otherwise he appeared to be quite happy to have a load of melons headed for the big city(LA). Wild wild guess is he must have been hauling well over 3000#s

So yeah you can tow it or haul it, the question is will you or the truck survive long?

22,000 isn't even the limit for a SRW 350 towing is 15,000 and the truck weighs about 8,300.
Heck, a gooseneck/5th wheel trailer gross is about 24,000 pounds.

My 01 SRW F-250 SD towed fine at 21,000, as long as you load the trailer properly and don't overload the truck

Wow! Thanks for all the replies.

I guess I didn't take into consideration that it was a gooseneck trailer, which ups the capacity! Thanks for all the comments.... except for yours devildog! Haha just kidding. I've seen that picture before... Not exactly attractive!
