I have a 1994 F-250 7.3 diesel. Lately ,occasionally when I make a turn, it feels like the front end shifts. After it shifts the steering is funky. It'll wander from left to right, sometimes difficult to steer. Then it' ll go away everything will go back to normal. I've had the front end checked out twice from two different mechanics. Both said it was a solid front end. Ball joints and tie rods are solid. Although, one said my u-joints are rusty and may need replacement. Does this sound right?
Have the steering box checked. It sounds like it's going bad. It could be the u-joints. There are u-joints in the front end at the hubs. If one is sticking it will cause those symptoms. Does it have auto or manual hubs? If it's the autos one may be sticking.
I would be looking VERY carefully at the stearing gear, and see if the u-joint that transfers motion into the gear from the steering column is going away on you. Although, you would think a mechanic who had "funny steering" as a symptom would check that after seeing ball joints and steering linkage is in good shape.
Just for grins, are you the original owner? In other words, you know for sure this truck wasn't in an accidend or driven off a clift where the front end wasn't buckled, "shortened", that type of damage? Heh, did this myself when I was younger and really stupid ;-))
I' ve had this truck for two years, never had a problem. It was a municipal truck from the University of Connecticut bought at an auction, If that helps
Hey Matt, donno if you ever go a resolution to your problem, but I just read this and wanted to tell you about a problem I once had that was very similar to what you describe here. If you have TTB front suspension, check the radius arm bushings.
