When I am pulling my travel trailer up hill and the transmission needs to down shift I am having problems with it not completly down shifting. It acts as if it is "hung" in between gears. This causes the tranny to overheat. Has anyone else had this problem and what is the fix?
What year is the truck? How much weight is being towed? If it is a 99'-04' it will have a 4R100 trans wether it is gas or diesel, but the diesel version has parts to make it a little stronger. How about the maintenance on the trans, from what I've read on this forum the 4R100's can have issues if they are not properly maintained especially if the truck is used often to tow heavy loads. Also if your truck is a 99'-00' I believe these years had a smaller radiator and may not have had an external trans cooler (not 100% sure of the trans cooler though). Also if you are towing to much weight for your particular model truck (different gear ratios) it will hurt the trans over time as well. Some of the other boyz will write in with their opinions, but I would give some more info on the truck itself, you will be amazed at the help you will get here.
It is an '03 w/7.3 diesel with 75,000 miles. Total weight of trailer loaded is around 9000#. I only see this problem when pulling up hill (has happened twice) and stuck behind slower traffic. I have followed maintenance schedule on transmission service.
The fix is to install a trans cooler from a '03 or newer 6.0L truck. It is MUCH larger than the cooler you have. It bolts right in, but you'll need to adapt your trucks 3/8" lines to the cooler's 1/2" lines.
Thanks for the info. I was thinking to also install a shift kit to get firmer shifts and to help eliminate the slippage between gears. Any recommendations?
