I got 302 been bored 30 has fresh gaskets and a edellbrok torker II manifold. I put a 1850 holley 4bbl on it and ran it all winter. some time in january i noticed some blueish exhaust, later on that week I drove it town, thats when the water pump decided to take a crap. that blew a nice hole in the head gskt in th number 5 cylinder i replaced all the gaskets and pump and the oil and filter. i found 3 bad rockers, the pushrods wore through them. when i put antifreeze back in it aparently the intake wasnt sitting on the gaskets right and it leaked all back out. i took out the valey gskts replaced them with rtv and ever since I havent been able to get the damn thing to run right, its too rich on the low end and its acting like its lean on the top end. ive got 55 mains in with extension tubes, a number 7 power valve, the middle of the road secondary spring. and mechanical choke the idle screws are mabey a turn, turn and a half form the bottom. Its got an electric fuel pump three fuel filters its in a 79 f-150 4x4 with a dump box. the timming is set to 6 degrees its got a late model duraspark distributer fresh air cleaner. in january it had 60 mains in it. they turned out to be way too rich when i got it back together, I think the intake was leaking
an 850 is a bit to large for that size motor, a 650-700 is max especially for a 4wd. but i have a feeling that your dizzy is 180* out. and thats why its not running. also check your dizzy cap for cracks, make sure the plug wires are in correct order and what do the plugs look like?
He said it's an 1850 which is a 600 CFM vacuum secondary, just about a perfect match for these motors.
3 fuel filters? Check and make sure they're all flowing freely and that none of them are plugged up. What kind of electric fuel pump? Is it adequate to the job? If it's too small, it could be starving the motor under load. But it kinda sounds as if you still have a vacuum leak. I'd check for that by the usual methods, spraying carb cleaner around with the engine running and listening for a change in RPM.
55 main jets sounds a little small, I think I'd check the above items first and then put the 60's back in as a baseline and go down 2 sizes at a time so your next step would be 58's. You might also have a power valve problem, check to make sure the gasket under the power valve is in good shape and is the correct one for that style valve and that the valve itself isn't blown.
I figured as much. I'm more of a carb guy but I'm starting to get a handle on this EFI stuff. Then, just when I think I know something, I get one that just shows me how much more there is to learn!
ok i got no effect with the carb cleaner, I readjusted the idle mix, in gear this time. I didnt get to the jets yet. after its warm it used to be a pain in the *** to start because it flooded, but i did nothing to fix this yet, in fact the idle mix needed to be richer, but it wouldnt act up, or flood out for nothing no matter what i did. its a little slugish just off idle maybe its leaning out or something. havent driven it yet today to see if cold starting has changed any yet.
