PSD front wheel bearings

I have read a bunch of threads on this, and am looking for an idea of simplicity.
Is this a project that can be taken on in the driveway with a socket set and a brass drift? I would hate to have to pony up a couple hundred dollars more to have someone else take care of it, but I realize that these bearings are very different from any others I have changed.

Only thing you should have, out of the ordinary, is a torque wrench that will go up to around 170 ft/lbs.

If the bearing has been driven on (Maybe 20 miles) since the brake started rubbing, is it likely that I will have to replace the outershaft?
Also, I have manual hubs, will I need the same seal kit as would be needed for the Autos? or is there a different seal kit for it?

See FTE member Guzzle's superb write-up about R&R'ing the front hubs:

I checked out Guzzles page, thats a huge help.
Do you know what the part number is for the Bearing itself?
All the shops I have talked to just have the full assembly @ $400.
Also, any idea on seals for the manual hub?
Im gonna tackle this tomorrow and dont want to get stuck without a part, or seal.

Which bearing are you asking about? The needle bearing is the only replaceable bearing in the hub assembly ( needle bearing - C6TZ-3123A ) as the main wheel bearings and hub are a sealed unit. $400 is about right for a dealership but most of the autopart stores have a sealed hub assembly for quite a bit less. The hub assembly comes with a new needle bearing.

No such thing as "just the bearings". Thery are a Timkin product, and they are the only manufacturer. They make them for not only Ford, but every other supplier to stick their own part numbers on.

The Timkin number is 515020 for my 2000 F-350 Lariat, which is four-wheel ABS. The number is different if you have only rear-wheel ABS.

I "negotiated" with my parts guy and got it for $249, plus tax. They can routinely be had for $289, so don't pay $400.

thanks for the advice guys.
If the break is starting to rub, do I need to replace the whole assembly, or just the needle bearing?

whoa...maybe we need to go back to square one and try to determine what your problem is. If you are having a brake problem, it may not be wheel bearings at all but rather a caliper problem. If your hub bearings are gone, you should hear some terrible noises when turning and have some slop when you jack the tire up and try to move it around.

What are the symptoms you are having?

Im sure it is the the right front bearing, i get a loud squeeling/screeching when I turn left. I had the same problem with the left front about 60k ago and ford replaced it as a faulty part. Im just not sure what they actually replaced. they said it was the sealed bearing. I havent been in one of these front ends before, so im not 100% on what exactly needs replacing.

That sounds like typical wheel bearing failure and the hub assembly needs to be replaced. You should be able to jack the tire up and pull on it, up and down, side to side and detect a small amount of play. That would be your main wheel bearings which are only replaceable as an entire hub assembly. As far as your hub seals are concerned, call a dealer with your year and the parts counter should be able to give you the part number you will need. Pick up some new hub studs incase you destroy your old ones or simply can't get them out. Factory part so you will need to visit a dealership anyway. You should be able to return them if not needed.

Fill out your signature line so we can better determine what year and model you have.

My service CD shows removable bearings on the 4x2 F250's and 350's so I would say no.

OK, so I replaced the hub assembly yesterday. Problem solved. Thank you all for your help.
If anyone has to do this in the future, save yourself a bunch of time and pick up the 4 studs from the stealership for the hub. It will keep a 30 minute job from taking 2 hours.
