Okay i have a 1987 F-150 with a rebuilt 351 Windsor and 4 barrel carb in it. For awhile i was able to drive it fine but for sometime now the truck would need to warm up till it activated the water cooling before i could take off because if i tried the truck would most likey just shut off, no stalling sputtering it just shuts off. It happens most often when it is moist, not sunny, or rainy outside. Also the truck sometimes wont start, because it will all of a sudden just not get any spark. Ive checked the plugs, distrupter, and coil and found nothing wrong with them. Ive ran out of ideas on wuts wrong with it and was wondering if any of you would help me in discovering the problem . thanks
is your truck an automatic with the C6 of E40d? or is it a manual? also, do you have the Duraspark system, or is it the EEC IV system? are you not getting spark at the spark plugs, or are you not even getting any at the coil? by the way you've written it, it just dies when you put it in gear, thats it. no sputtering or anything whatsoever. is that right? a few more details could possibly be really helpful.
Im sorry for the lack of detail on the truck, but i have finally found out the problem to it. I believe i did have a duraspark system in it and it was completely shot when i took it in to get it tested, ive installed a new one and the truck runs fine and starts quick and easy no stalls or dieing.
There is another problem ive been witnessing though, ive burnt my silinoid countless times when it happens and im not sure if it may be my battery is not too good or something, but when the truck runs alot then u shut it off and try to turn it over it sometimes will go really slow or stall the starter out and maybe turn it over. Im sure this question has been asked before so srry for not looking. Thanks for the replies though its been a help
Glad to help, those ignition systems are important and are prone to failures sometimes,
The solenoid problem could be a grounding problem though or a loose or corroded connection. i would suggest checking all your battery cables and the starter cable, clean them, and then find out if the problem is still there. another thing that could be wrong is the starter itself, mine did that once, and when i turned the key all it would do was click, and i hit the starter with a wrench (all I had with me) and it fired right up, so you might need a new starter or clean your current one. that should do it so let us know whats up.
K i did all that you said but ill try it out tommorrow seeing that its dark out ill just wait. My information was slightly wrong in the fact that the motor in there i mean it a lot of ppl say its a 351 windsor, but i would disagree, i think its just a straight 351 H.O. but im only basing that on the air filter cover says 5.8 Litre 4V H.O. (although i kno they made a 351 windor H.O. so maybe it is that) ive tried looking up the vin numbers for the number but havent had any lucky. (im srry im full of questions :P) that i still cant figure out y the when i went to time the thing with a timing light it wouldnt even start when i switched it.
