HELP!! e40d trouble.
How much you should spend depends on how long and how hard you plan to drive the truck from here on. If you just need to get by for a year or two and then sell it, then cheap may work.
If you plan to keep the truck another 100K I would go for a good rebuild. If you want to tow, I would go for a "bullet Proof" rebuild.
My "Bullet proof" rebuild on my 94 E4OD which I use to tow, cost me about $2500 back around 97/98. I told the guy to go with all uprated parts for towing etc.
A lot of the cost of a rebuild depends on what parts are worn out. If you have hard parts like gears(yeow) sun shells etc, the rebuild will cost more than just clutches and cleaning.
If you are handy with a wrench and have time, you might buy an off the shelf rebuild and install it yourself. I have heard of prices being under $1000 for a decent rebuild.
I have read that Ford's remans are about $2500+ and come with a good warranty etc.
Yopu might post where you are from so some of the guys can give you referals to a local shop.
The way I figure, if the rest of the truck is in decent shape and I want to drive it a long time, a rebuild is cheap. Much cheaper than a new truck with payments.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
A bit of a crapshoot, but you could source a tranny at a boneyard. Try to find one in a truck that looks cared-for but was damaged in an accident. This option really only makes sense if you can do the labor, as paying for the install, then possibly having to do it again if you get a bad tranny, kills the cost advantage.
