Step 1. Get a van manual. Chilton makes one. I did my motor rebuild about 1500 miles ago. Got a leak tight install, all fluids. Get some High Tack gasket sealer. It's red and is it tackey! Got mine at NAPA. Make sure the valve cover flanges are flat and not bent up by some ham fist. I got a little extra support from some after market special washers. They are not round, but follow the shape of the valve covers and are about 1 1/2" long. Pick them up at the auto store made for the task at hand. Mine are chrome with high tack tracks. Use the high tack and you will know what I am talking about.
1987 4.9. I guess that fuel infected. Mine has a carb. Any who, the MANUAL says to discharge the fuel pressure first!!!
1. Disconnect inlet hose at the crankcase filler cap.
2. Remove the throttle body inlet tubes.
3. Disconnect the accelerator cable at the throttle body. Remove the cable bracket retracting spring. Remove the accelator cable bracket from the upper intake manifold and position the cable bracket out of the way.
4. Remove the fuel line from the fuel rail. Be careful not to kink the line.
5. Remove the upper intake manifold and throttle body assembly. See section 5. Got to love it.
6. Remove ignition coil and wires.
7. Remove the rocker arm cover.
8. Remove and discard the gasket.
TO INSTALL:
9. Clean the mating surfaces for the cover and head thoroughly. I use brake cleaner.
10. Coat both mating surfaces with gasket sealer and place the new gasket on the head with the locating tabs downward. I did not do this. I placed the gasket on the valve cover. I used sealer on the cover and the gasket only. Not on the head. That way you can remove the cover from the motor without screwing up the gasket.
11. Place the cover on the head making sure the gasket is evenly seated. Tighten the bolts to 48-84 inch lbs. (5-9.5 Nm)
12. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
13. If you are going to keep the van, buy a MANUAL......
14. Like I wrote above, mine is carbed. Just copied the MANUAL......
not hard to take the valve cover off a 4.9 carbed on my 77 not much stuff in the way just the air cleaner and the air cleaner bracket thing and the uh throttle cable bracket i think(this is a F-100)
That manual got lots of mistakes in it. Just mark the vaccum hoses and dont mess around with the idle control screw when you take the throttle cable off. Good time to give everything a good cleaning, especially the throttle body and upper intake. Lots of black coke.
my engine was a grimy mess...still is...i think its cuz the last person who messed with valve cover didnt tighten bolts enough and it leaked some oil for several yrs lol
