Still needing help plz

Hey Guys (and Ladies)

I dont post that often but I tend read these boards daily and it seems there quite
a few people here that know alot about our trucks so I'm going to ask a few questions that
I cant seem to get a concrete answer on. Hope you guys will give me your thoughts and opinions.

Thanks in advance.

First of all the vehicle in question:
05 F-250 Ext.Cab PSD 4X4 XLT

1. Im wanting to go with a 35X12.50R17 tire, stocks seem way too small for this truck to me.
I dont like the idea of putting this wide of tire on the stock 7.5" wheel so I was
thinking of going with a pro comp 6001 series 17X9 wheel
http://www.procomptires.com/series6001.htm.
These wheels have a 4.5" Back Spacing, a -12mm Offset, and a load rating of 3420 Ibs.
A. Will this back spacing and offset be alright?
B. Is the load rating for this wheel safe for F-250?

2. I have been looking at a Cooper SST 35X12.50R17 OR a Mickey Thompson MTZ 315/70/R17(35" equilvalant)
I know Cooper owns Mickey Thompson but what do you guys know about these two tires?
Opinions on one over the other and why?
I'm worried more about life of the tire than noise or ride.

3. If the wheels are ok for this heavy of a truck and I go with the above wheel and tire
combo.
A.How much lift will i need to clear the tire and not have a rubbing issue?
I'm Hoping that a 2.5" leveling kit would do it but i have no idea. Again Opinions or
proof that this will or will not work.
B. Opinions on a good leveling Kit that wont have the truck nose high?
Been looking at Fabtech, Revtek, and of course DR if i can find one and can afford it

Thanks Again.

I would go w/ the Cooper Discoverer Radial STT's, I have had great experiences w/ the Discoverer's w/ my blazers. Great Price. As for the leveling kit you should go w/ at least a 3" I believe Donahoe Racing makes a 3.5" level kit which will be perfect for that truck. Personally I would go w/ 16x10's rather than 16x9's A wider rim will improve your bead lock, look better, and support better tire wear and weight distribution. you will be able to fit 35's w/ a 3.5" kit. your only concern on rubbing will be the front if any....just a little trimming if you want it. It also depends if you drive on road on off-road where you will need some extra clearance.

I own a set of the new style Cooper Discoverer STT'S w/ the aggressive sidewall tread and I love them. Granted they are on my Jeep not my F350 but they're still awesome. They provide excellent traction especially on wet roads and they're not noisy at all compared to anything by Swamper, BFG, or Dunlop. I can't help w/ the lift as my F350 is still stock. Just my .02. Good luck and post pics when your done!!

Thanks for the reply guys,

Have to stick with the 17's I understand that 16's wont clear the calipers on the newer SD. I was thinking a 9" rim because its the min. recommended for a 35" tire and i figured going wider would mean needing to have that much more clearance.

Also Forgot to mention that part sorry. Only 4wheeling I would be doing in this truck would be to get to my tree stands during hunting season, other than that it would be mostly highway, but with that said i dont want to get into my fenders cause of lack of clearance.

So far sounds like the cooper sst are the way to go as far as tires.

Hungry for more info guys thanks

17 rims huh...sorry...i was thinkin 16's. I had a chevy in high school w/ the cooper discoverers and they wore out slowly, great traction. Got a pair of 33x12.50 STT's on a dodge ram when they came out and loved them. As soon as my pro-comps where out im goin back to coopers cuz i got alota highway drivin to do (original plan of super swamper boggers it gone !) 9 in wide rim as the minimum i would still go to a 10 wide rim, keeping your required off-set. Narrower rims sometimes dont make a wide tire look right and rims as wide as the tire don't look to good either (a.k.a. sprint car setup) Those STT's will look nice on your truck, when are you going to make ur decision ?

That combo will be just fine. You can fit the 35's without a leveling kit at all. But, a 4" lift with 35's looks SWEET!

Check the lift thread at the top of the forum, it has pics and desrciptions of all the q's you have.

I prefer a narrower wheel to a wider wheel. I think the 9" wheel will hold the bead better than a 10" wheel if you air down at all (many people use an 8" wheel with 12.5" tires). I think a 17x9 is probably going to work really well for a 35x12.5 tire. If you put anything more than a 2" leveling kit on your F250 it won't be a leveling kit because the front will sit higher than the rear.

I would run it stock height for a while, and add a 2" leveling kit if you need a little more room. The PSD seems to be about 1" lower in the front than the V8 or V10 engines (based on several of my own measurements), so you may need a little boost in the front, but I wouldn't do it until you see how it works stock height. I have seen several V10 trucks with 35" tires and I think it's perfect.

Also, I prefer the smallest lift that clears the biggest tire set up, so take my advice for what it's worth. Some people like the wide stance look, or to have the tallest lift in town. My take on it is to put the largest tire you need with the smallest amount of lift that will clear that tire. I think for the 2005 SD it's no lift with a 35" tire.

ACE,

...I want to make sure I am clear as to what you are saying, as I just bought a new 06' SD CC 4x4 Lariat. I'll post a pic and get your advice, since it sounds like you have the same taste as myself.

For the diesel, the need to go 2" level, RIGHT??

With that, I can do 35"s?? (a 35" roughly the same as 315/70/17?)

Can you tell from my pic if my wheels are 8" or 9"??? (tires are 265/70/17)

If they are only 8", would the 315/70/17 be too big??

....Thanks for any help. I am currently debating just getting new tires vs. finding some used 20" Ford Superduty wheels, which I love. There is something about these current wheels that I am not in love with.....not sure what it is. May be something some new hooves would fix Thanks again,

oops, forgot pic. ....This is regarding the 17" wheels. You'll see in the photos, the wheels don't have much "curve". But I like a stock look, as opposed to the Cali-mod look, at least for a work truck. Can you see the hail damage on the truck?? Gonna try and get all my mods done by next week, ....that is Ole' Faithful in the backgroundCannot figure out how to post pic? Any way to do it other than adding a link?

I don't know if a diesel "needs" a 2" leveling kit, but I know I measured several diesels against my own and they sat one inch lower in the front. I would always try stock first, but a 2" leveling kit on an F250 would make it sit about level. No way to tell about width of the wheels, and I don't see your pic. The 315/70/17 tire is "supposed" to be mounted on an 8.5" or wider wheel if I remember right, but it'll work on an 8" wheel.
