Did you notice that the part that rotted away was the stud itself in the first place ? 
The nut will come off a stainless stud later in life, and if it rots away, not biggie...

The nuts were rusted as well as the studs. The nuts were just about gone and hard to get a grip on. I was looking for non corroding nuts like the tsb was claiming.
