early 99 F250 SD programming

I have searched in vain for info on the differences in pcm programming for my truck. Does anyone have information on this subject? What did they do to change the later trucks computers? When a chip or programmer is added does this make the fuel delivery and other perameters more on par with the later trucks?
Does this mean that no matter what I do (higher capacity hpop, bigger turbo, larger injectors) I will never be at the levels of the newer trucks cause of the different computers unless I change out PCM. I don`t know enough about the subject but that is why I`m here! Any and all comments or links welcome Thanks

My understanding is that it is the programming (the flash version) that makes the difference. I don't think there is ANY difference in the PCM physically between years.

I had, what I thought was the latest flash on my early-99, then I found a flaw in the shifting when under load. If I would let the truck shift out of OD on its own on a steep grade (with cruise control on), it wouldn't shift out of OD after I crested the hill. I'd have to push the cruise button off then on manually. So I found that it needed an update and Ford wanted an hour of labor to flash the PCM. That gave me the chance to get a PCM from Jody Tipton with the latest flash PLUS a 40hp towing upgrade . Man, Jody's PCM is the best...increased fuel mileage AND power, as well as fixed the shifting glitch...and it was $25 cheaper than having the Ford stealership flash the PCM for me!
