Called Patti today, and got the appointment set up at BTS for a trans build. Getting a free TC has definately heightened my anticipation to get it done, so I just couldn't resist any longer and caved in. The big day is going to be June 6th.
That was just about the first available day they had. I'm excited -- and my PMS is getting way out of control.
thats kind of a reverse-logic approach to it i guess. im very happy to see you doing it, it's just that i want one too. i cant wait for that date to come too, i want to hear how it is. plus two more days and im out for summer!

I know what you mean and that you were just jerking my chain. School's out for the summer already? That, is something I'd like to have back. Summertime nights with no worries. Just some fun in the sun.
I will for sure be reporting on the results of the BTS trans. Patti also told me that they'll install the 6.0 trans cooler I bought while I'm down there. I like working on my truck, but if the expert shop is willing to do the install, I'll gladly turn it over to them.
Me, I'm just about to go to a BTS valve body, so I'm a bit behind. I'm sure I'll get to a full tranny from them (or maybe John Wood, he's much closer to me ) sometime in the future. Hopefully my stocker with a BTS VB will last for a few years.
Arnineteys, I just read a thread on TDS last night about switching from auto to manual by a transplant, and have read the same topic a few times before. I've thought about it myself for sometime down the road, since I would've preferred a manual in my truck anyway. Basically what everyone says is that by the time you figure the cost of a swap and all that's involved, you could have a built auto that just won't break. They also said it'd probably be easiest to do the swap if you found a wrecked SD with a manual, so you could take everything out of it, and not get raped at the parts dept. or at the dealer. I figure eventually when mine dies, hopefully I'll be able to afford a real built performance auto, and not just a reman. from Ford, because if I can afford it that's what I'll do, 100%.
Holler at me when it gets around that time JT....I live about 2 hours away from Lead Hill.
I wondedred how close you were. I was hoping you'd make it to the BTS Open House last weekend, but I think you were busy with the engine swap. Saw that you got it done. Congrats. I'm sure you're glad to be finished.
I'll be sure to give you a shout when I'm headed down. The plan as of now, is to head down on the 5th and stay the night somewhere so I can be at the shop by 8:00 am. It's going to be a long day there on the 6th, but one that I am so much looking forward to.

Oh, absolutely. It could get very expensive. However, I know someone with a shop who says anytime I want, he'll trade me a functioning 6-speed (and flywheel, clutch, bell-housing) for my automatic - provided my trans is rebuildable at that time. He says he frequently converts in the other direction, manual to auto.
I did some estimations, based on new parts I'd need, and various, miscellaneous items, and I think, under those circumstances, I could do the swap (all my labor) for less than $1000 - if I'm lucky quite a bit less.
Now, understand that I don't want a 6-speed because it is so durable (at least it is at the power levels my truck will ever see - apparently, over 400 rear wheel horsepower, they get kind of fragile), but for other reasons - 1) I hate automatics, always have; and, 2) I really like to be in control; and, 3) shifting is just so much fun!
If my house ever stops breaking (now I need an air conditioner - a couple months ago it demanded a new roof), and I have the time for my truck to be down, OR my auto trans breaks, I'll have to reevaluate it at that time and figure out what would be best to do.

AMEN!!!
I don't much like the way my auto shifts, now. I'm sure the BTS vb and Jody's programs will change that... coming soon to a truck near you!
As for the ZF-6... I think the only real weak component at the higher hp levels is the clutch. An upgraded Suncoast one is supposed to be the way to go, in those cases. Can be a bit grabby for daily driving, but holds plenty strong. This is just what I've read...
