How do beadlocks work??

OK, im sure im gonna get some flack over this, but ive searched and searched and cant find an actual explaination of how beadlocks really work...ive seen tons of pics (like Ivans for example) and i think i have a good idea, but someone asked me the other day and i couldnt give an honest answer...ive seen them on trucks, and have asked many people, but i always get the typical "they hold the tire from popping off the bead, stupid!" answer...so im hoping somebody that runs them can explain it to me...thanks in advance...

double beadlocks like ivans have an insert that goes in the tire then the wheel basically goes in each sode of the tire and clamps the beads to the insert.

a regular beadlock just has a inner and outer ring on the outside of a wheel, the bead is clamped between the two rings with bolts....inner beads usually dont need it because they are very hard to blow

The outer bead usually sees a bunch more pressure, which is why beadlocks always uesd to come that way. But double beadlocks is the way to go. I just wish I could afford some

i wish i could recieve the ones ive already paid for

i would have gone with a regular style if i had 15" wheels, but i have 16.5's therfore no beads at all, so if i had the outside clamped and aired down, the inside would just fall off because there is no bead lump to hold the "bead"

Would it be a good idea to double beadlock my 16.5's?? Ive been thinking about finding some 16 or 17" wheels because of the 16.5 bead dillema, but if beadlocks are cheaper than wheels i would go that route...

Why don't you guys running beadlocks run tubes in your tires? That would keep the inner bead from popping off and you could air down as low as you want to...

Heck, even just tubes with no bead locks will do this as well, but then you have the chance of the tire spinning on the rim and ripping the valve stem off the tube.

Who knows... tubes might get pinched easily running that low of pressures.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I can't find it anymore but I took a short video if my tires at 5psi during a burnout. The sidewalls are wrinkled to hell. It would spin them on the rims without the beadlocks.

The delivery drama aside, you can get Dan's double beadlocks for not much more (sometimes less) than some of the 17" rims and never have to worry about losing a bead. The only downside I can think of to them, where a tube would be an advantage, is that they are heavy by the time the insert is installed. If a little extra weight doesn't bother you they're the way to go.

dan has the new one peice lightweight inserts avalable now...3-4lbs vs the 13lb pvc ones...that saves a good bit of weight

if you order custom wheels from dan or john....just add about 4 weeks on the projected delivery time they give you

im glad im getting rid of my ligthweight cast alum wheels, i don have2 worry about busting one on a rock now

Doesn't Dan sprinkle his beadlocks with pixie dust making them Super Special?

Maybe it was just Ivan who did that...I can't recall for sure

I think I'll call Dan and bribe him so when your beadlocks show up they have rainbow centers
