T-stat would have been my first guess too. I knew mine was screwed, but I had to pull the engine anyway so I only did it once it was out. Yes, they are a pain. Ditto on the "loose the Bosch plugs". Motorcraft or Autolite do just fine for a lot less.
And 27MPG/HWY for a 4 banger is not doing too bad.
