I have a 3 speed manual, 3 on the tree, and was wondering what model number transmission it is. I am looking at adding a gear vendors under/over drive, and they asked for a model number to see if it would be the same as a typical 4 speed manual. Unless there is an easier way to add an overdrive, while keeping the 3 on the tree.
Thank you guys, and any help here at all would be appreciated, and I already searched.
This is the David Kee 4 speed top loader site. The link will take you to 3 speed info, which he has put on there for some reason.
There is also a 4 speed OD trans from the late '70s and '80s, but it would require a floor shifter. Look under ID charts, toploader imposters for a look at it.
Many times a 4 speed will be a direct replacement for the 3 speed, as it was on my '65 Mustang.
I put a 4 speed OD tranny in my '72 302. Gear ratios are spaced like a 3 speed but with an added gear for overdrive. It was out of an 85 F150 at the local pick-a-part...cost me $100 + $150 for an overhaul kit that I put in myself. It is an aluminum case top loader with the shifter on the top, called an RTS. These are fairly light duty trannies so if you are towing something heavy or if you drive like an idiot they might not hold up.
Would sure be cheaper than the gear vendors thing. By the way it is 24" long if you want to compare with your 3 speed.
hmmm...I have an extra 4 speed, but I wanted to keep the shifter on the column, Gear vendors just needed to know if the size of the toploader (I believe, I could be wrong) to add on a aftermarket O/D.
