Bilstein shock lifespan

What is the average lifespan on a set of Bilsteins. My truck is lifted 4" and I have had my bilsteins for approx 45,000 miles.

That (without being rude) is like asking how long is a piece of string.
Shocker absorbers lifes REALLY depend on how you use them (do you go over lots of bumps? Mostly highway travel or mostly city? etc.)

I would expect a good set of bilsteins to go to about 60-80k under "normal" condition before I would replace them.

Are you talking about the 5100 series? Tire size at 35"? If so, then you are good for another 35-50k miles. Unless (as others have mentioned) you are off-roading, mudding, and rock climbing. But with GENERAL use...you are good to go.

That all changes if you notice a leaky shock...

On lesser vehicles I could tell if a shock had gone bad based on the bounce. With my F250 I don't think I would see that much. So other than leakage, what are the other failure modes and how would I know. I realize this is a stupid question, but I have 85K on my truck (second owner) and I am pretty sure that these are original shocks. I am fairly frugal, but control and safety outweigh anything. I guess its anyones best guess on this one. I do a good amount of driving on Baja dirt roads sometimes with and sometimes without a Lance camper. My Bilsteins are the titanium 5100 series with 35's. I had BFG muds for the first 35,000, but felt like they were real hard on the suspension. Now I have BFG A/Ts. I appreciate the feedback and welcome any more.

I just got a shock (pun) looking for new shocks. went to a custom truck shop in Charlotte and they wanted about $500.00 to provide and install Bilsteins on my 99 2 WD PSD. I began looking for turnip greens growing out of my ears. What do y'all think of a price like that? I need new shocks, but I do almost all highway and very little towing. Any suggestions are more than welcome. How hard can this be to do in my driveway myself? If someone directs me to a good quality shock I can afford I will do the install myself.

Markadeck- Check the link that Biz4two put up. 4 Bilstein HD shocks would run you about $260.00 w/shipping. Putting them on is simple.

I just ordered 4 for $250 (including shipping) from ebay. The auction number was 7992889138, maybe he has more. I also found a web site that wanted $260. Not sure how hard they are to put on, but I'm anticipating no more then 2 hours.

I did, thanx. What's with this 156 and 158 wheelbase stuff? I have one or the other, but how do I figure out for sure? I guess I can get someone to hold one end of the tape for me but does 2 inches really matter?

The SuperCab LWB has a 158" wheelbase. It's the CC SWB that has the 156.2" wheelbase.

They're actually really easy. Unbolt and take off the old shock, then put on the new shock and re-bolt. Someone else will have to chime in with the actual torque spec (or do a search). My general rule of thumb is to tighten them until the rubber bushing is the same size as the metal washer.

I got mine at Rowells in Indian Trail three years ago. Good price then, don't know about now!! Most of the time you may be able to "dickker" about the $$$ I just got a RoadTamer rear suspension 'set-up' from them, and kept the same shocks.
