Anyone know where and how much the key or tool is to remove the factory stereo?
OR is there a way to get it out with out them?
Chris
You can use a hanger or other similar object, but I would buy the tool. If you mess up the clips, you have to pull the dash. You can pick up the tool for less than $5 a parts stores.
The tool set is 3.99 at wal-mart. They have a little groove on the end so they'll work properly with the locking mechanism. Just push in untill it clicks (you won't get a click using a coat hanger), push the tools away from each other and pull out.
The coat hanger trick does work, as does the screwdriver idea. Just knowing when to stop inserting is the key. If you go in to far it won't work.
So how far is too far? I have two sets of the removal tools and have tried both, going in a little bit or going in a lot. I hear noises and feel something but the head unit won't come out.
What is the magic length that I need to employ when I stick my tool in the hole?
Easy now.
I'm trying to get out of town with the new PIE installed.
I'm no stereo removal guru, in fact I have one I can't get out because the clips that hold it in place are damaged on one side. I have tried the removal tool however, You want to push them in slowly, you will hear and feel the click when the tool engages the clips, don't need to go in too far. If you get the tool to engage in the proper place on each side, gently apply pressure towards the outside of each side and at the same time wiggle/pull the head unit free. It may take some patience, hopefully the clips aren't damaged. I could only get one side on mine free. I hope that helps and makes some sense.
Thanks for the assist Steve, but how far is too far? Or how much is enough? I'm looking for a measurement because I can hear all kinds of noises and want to make this happen.
I'm not sure I can give you an exact distance but it's not far. If you get a flashlight and look in the holes, you can see where the tool will enter. It only needs to go in a short distance after that. Don't go in too far. If the clips are even slightly damaged, it can be a real pain and the more you mess with it, the greater chance the clips will be damaged. You might try running by a Best Buy or other installation shop and see if they can get it out quick? Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck! I feel your pain, I spent a long time trying to get mine out and never did.
The tool should engage the clip exactly 1.25" from where it enters the hole in the faceplate. You will need to go maybe .125" at most past that point depending on if the tool has the little notches on the end.
