Knock them halfway in and then pull it out, with a big pair of pliers.

freeze plugs
Be sure you have enough room to swing a hammer to get the new one in. I use permatex on the outside of the new freeze plug and a socket big enough to fit inside of it. There is a very close tolerance when inserting the new one and it takes a pretty good blow to get it started so make sure you have enough room.
