jkdbanks the 352 hp had very high compression and a radical solid lifter cam. It may have had better heads too but I can't say for sure.
I agree that the 352 is a fine engine. I had several 360s during the 70s including 2 new ones and all but a couple were junk, but mostly due to the quality control problem with just about everything made in this country back then. Obviously just boring an engine out .050 wouldn't make it junk. And when similiarly equipped there isn't that much difference between a 352 and a 390. I had a 352 that I put a stock 4bbl manifold and a 600 holley on. It was in a 62 Sunliner and if you drove it you would have a hard time guessing if it was a 352 or a 390. I am not saying more cubes aren't better but for everyday driving you would never notice the difference except at WOT.
I actually ran a 58 car 332 in my 69 highboy and with a cast iron intake, 600 holley and homemade duals it ran better than any 360 I ever had and got a little better mileage. Usually averaged 13 1/2-14 with 4.10 gears. I drove the crap out of it too.

Thank you for all your help. I was pretty confident that my 352 got around 13-14mpg. The owner that I bought it from claimed around 15mpg, which may be stretching it a little. I am going with dual exhaust and headers for more performance as well as mileage. Would high compression pistons from an early 352 be compatible? I'm looking for about 9.3-9.5:1 compression. Were there any manual overdrive 4-speed transmissions that fit FE engines? I would like to know some gas mileages from fello 352ers.
People always say that 352's are junk and 360's and 390's are better. They are waaaayyy wrong. My granfather took a 352 from a '67 F-100 and dropped it into a '71 F-600 and that thing would pull like hell. It once pulled my grandfather's tractor trailer with a low bed and a crane on it. The clutch was never the same after that though.
Chevys are like a rock-
you have to kick 'em to go any where!!!
I have 11:1 compression in my 360, I cannot run any less than 91 octane or it runs like crap and sucks gas like mad.
I also have a 650 carter, .030 overbore, msd billet dizzy, and ede performer 390 intake, rv cam, and oversized valves. stock exh. mannifolds running through 1 3/4" pipes with cherry bombs. I dynoed with 243 hp @ 4k rpm and a very pathetic 197ftlb@ 3300(due to my tranny)
I am going to rebuild the tranny(cause it slips like crazy) and get some headers and 2 3/4" pipes with a cross over. I am guessing that I will get over 300 to the wheels when I am done.
there are several other things to be done to get more power, like solid lifter roller valve train, windage trays and things of the sort, all of wich I would like to eventually get.
anyway I love my 360 and will defend it till the end.
however if I were to want to stay around the same displacement, with a NEW engine, I would have to go with a small block and build it up. HP to weight is way better. I had to buy a 1k lb engine stand to put my FE on, and it (built the same way) only puts a small amount more power than a 351.
I hope I made sense, just trying to defend my engine
With 11:1 compression I am surprised it even runs on 91 unless you have aluminum heads. I would think around 9.5:1 would be about all I would go on a daily driver and even then you may need premium fuel(read expensive).
Ranger, I am curious why all that compression and an rv cam? Those two features don't seem like they would make an optimal package together. I would almost bet that 10:1 with a 270 grind would make more power.
I've got a '67 with a 352 in it and am thinking of upgrading to a 390. What do you suppose I could get for my old 352 with only 50,000 original miles on it? Is it worth anything?
Where are you at darkwolf40? Good FEs are hard to come by anymore but the demand for them isn't all that great either. I would think it should be worth at least $300-$400. You will have better luck selling it before you remove it so any prospective buyers can hear it run and check it out.
well willow, Like I stated there are other things I plan on doing. and the high compression pistons are there so I dont have to take it all back apart, just replace the cam, carb and heads when I get the money.
you see I dont have a garage, and the city officials prohibit non running vehicles to set for longer than 30 days in view from the street. SO, I had to get it running and tagged before they impounded it therefore, I built the bottom end in anticipation for the rest of the motor when I can afford it. now it has been a year or more since I did that and my $$ is not flowing as I hoped, rather it is flowing in a direction I had not anticipated, my house.
in hind sight I do wish I had the lower compression so it could be a real daily driver, but as long as I can start it and drive it around the block to please the officials, then **** 'EM!
I do have the headers on order and should be here soon, i hope :/
I have a 1967 Ford f-100 Ranger and it has a 352 in it and it runs strong. i found at a garage sale the factory service manuals for it it gives detailed description for fixing everthing on that truck. by the way the bore is 4.000 in. and the stroke is 3.500 in.
