I'd leave them on. It would definately make getting in and out easier. To me it also looks better, unless you shoot for some westin side bars or something like that.

I vote to spend your money; I think it needs something, but running boards wouldn't look quite right on your rig. Some kind of step bar maybe. Part of the problem is that the pinch weld is so ugly, it's got to be covered with something...

Sure looks taller than a 5.5" lift! Great looking ride.

Unless you got little ones tryin' to climb up I say leave 'em off. Much cleaner.

As far as covering the pinch weld (which I agree looks like crap) try painting it black say with that rubberizer undercoating stuff or similar. Simple. Cheap. Effective.

Leave 'em on. Makes gettin' in/out easier, AND they keep a lot of road debris off the sides of your nice lookin' ride.

Talking runnin boards

I ike to stock ones myself especialy the lights for us oldies getting in and out. I mounted white LED sealed beams underneath so you don't step in a hole. The dow side is keeping the road crap off the running board soas not to trackmud inside.

Leave 'em off. Looks much better without them. I put some Kodiak Sidewinder steps on mine (7" lift). They extend when you open the door and retract when the door is closed to give the truck a nice clean look. I personally don't like running boards on a lifted truck.

I'm 6ft 8in and I would wonder how even I would be able to gracefully get into that thing w/o running boards. My 4x2 puts my butt at the exact level I need. If I didn't have 78498378403 people getting in and out of my truck I'd take mine off, but for now they are going to have to stay. Thats a good idea about mounting LEDs under the running boards and tapping into the lights that are already there.

ymmv,

I shopped pretty hard for the Power Steps. No more than +/- $100 anywhere. Finally went with www.4wheelonline.com, but I paid tax because they work in my state. $1,241. Looks like www.electricstep.com has the best price right now $1,179.

I installed them myself with a friend who had already put a set on his 04 X. He took 8 hrs by himself into the night. Together he and I did mine in 4 hrs. Go to AMP Researchs site to see the install instructions. Most of the time is spent removing door panels and splicing into the wiring harness.

Thanks for the pointer. I just ordered from electricstep (I'd been hovering over this purchase for weeks, so I'm not that impulsive) and they have a $150 rebate, which, plus tax, ended up around $1100 delivered. Not bad. Still a massive profit I'm sure, but not bad.

I'm surprised by the idea of having to remove each door trim or whatever. I would have thought they could find a smart way to link into the core of the car electronics instead of a "one size fits all" approach and just go to first principles and splice into door switches ... maybe I should take this opportunity to shave the door handles and install electric door openers ...

Cheers,

Eddie-
Sweet X. I did not like my X stock ( for a few reasons) one being the running boards were not needed and thought a lift would make them funtional and the X look better. I do not many after market boards and hate the price of all of them. You cannot beat the price of the free stockers and they function very well. With your X, they color match perfectly as well. It looks very clean from above without them but everyone will see that pinch weld as they walk up to it.
I love it and vote to keep the functional and attractive boards.
