Exclamation Woah! Flames!

Yesterday, my friend was starting my 85 f250 5-speed and a 460, while i was looking under the hood in the carb, to see if gas was getting in. all was normal and it tried to start once, but it didn't, then it tried again and a flame with gasoline shot out of the carb and it started, the flame only lasted about a half a second, but my face caught the middle of it. I'm alright, i just lost a few hairs, but any ideas as to what would cause a flame to shoot out of the carb?

Backfire through the intake can be attributed to several conditions. Often in combination. A lean condition, often from an intake leak or lean choke setting. Intake valve too tight or leaking. Incorrect cam timing. Overadvanced ignition timing. Incorrect firing order.

Flames out the carb mean fuel puddle in the intake and an intake valve still open when spark occurs. So an over rich condition combined with a timing problem (to far advanced).
