hello i have a 1983 ranger 4x4 v6 .last night going up a steep hill i downshifted into 4th and now its stuck . was wondering what years the trans will interchange and if a 2wd trans is the same. thanks 87Bronco
Don't hold me to this, but I believe the 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, and 4.0 are all in the same engine family, and share the same bell housing bolt pattern (correct me if I'm wrong guy's) that will make it easier to find a tranny, because it covers alot more years, than just a 2.8 would, As Zach has said," it will for sure need to be a 4x4 tranny. I'm not a ford machanic, BUT i DID SLEEP AT A HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS LASTNIGHT!
The 2.8l, 2.9l, and 4.0l are all members of the cologne block, and share a bellhousing pattern (all except the 4.0l SOHC which has a slightly different bolt placement but will still work). In '83 and '84 the trans would have been a TK5, if you want a direct replacement you should look for a TK5 from a 2.8l or 2.9l. I believe the TK has a removable tail housing to allow for conversion to 4x4, but I'm not 100% on that. After '84 the Mitsubishi FM145/146 is more likely in a 4x4, the TK's were mostly used on 2wd's after the introduction of the Mitsu, so your best bet for finding a bolt-in replacement is in a '83/'84 4x4. If you're going to convert, I suggest finding an M5odR1 from a '91 or newer 4.0 OHV, it will require a little conversion, but will be much more solid.
Oh and FYI, the 3.0l Vulcan shares nothing in common with any other V-6 offered in an RBV.
I almost passed out when I read that...the M5OD being called "SOLID?" CRAZY!!! lol Nah it's pretty good if you're decently easy on it. Remember if you switch tranny's you'll need the stick from the new one of course.
