Question Window Glass - Best Source

Hey Guys

My driver side window on my 55 has a nice crack in it. I want to replace it. The glass that is in there now is pretty thick, looks like its double thick at the end. Is this the Auto Safety glass that is out there?

I've done some research on replacing it. I've gone to all the biggest suppliers for my truck, and the prices vary. Some are as low as $40 and some as high as $90. There really isn't any detail whether its the original thin glass or the thicker safety glass. Anyone know which supplier has the best, safest glass for the best price?

I know a lot of you have gone through the glass replacement process already.

Jeff

Jeff -

I just went to a local glass guy and he made them up for me as inexpensively as I could buy them anywhere. AND, I saved the freight. Got tinted glass, too.

The side and rear (flat) windows are tempered glass. Laminated safety glass is usually the winshield only.

Same here. Much cheaper.

In the "good ol days" safety glass was used in side windows. It wasn't until curved glass was used instead of flat that tempered side glass became standard. If your window has a crack in it it must be safety glass, even a stone chip will make tempered glass shatter into a million little cubes.

I had the local auto-glass guy do my front and rear glass, I'm going to do my side windows later, but thats only cuz I'm on a budget and other things are more important, seeing as the side windows are solid, but look a little bad. The guy quoted me for all my side glass(wings and the big piece) for $200(all 4 pieces) and they did my front and rear glass for about 50 bucks less than what I could've ordered it for.

A good glass shop can cut their own safety glass. Tempered glass need to have a pattern sent to the glass supplier to cut and temper. Mid Fifty etc sells precut glass kits unless you want something special.

I called a local glass shop, they quoted $55 to cut some safety glass for me..
Does that sound reasonable? high?

They are right down the street in the next town.. I will definately save money on shipping.. I was thinking it would be more like $40 though, what did you guys pay?

That sounds about average to me for a side glass...in this neck of the woods anyway. We have only one shop here and prices are usually higher when they are the only game in town and you live in a small town...
