Late chiming in, but my thoughts will be with your friends. I just had another conversation with my mother about this very subject yesterday, as I am the designated decision maker should it ever be necessary for her.
A hard decision for Rolando and family to make, yet one which is made with love for Mercedes and not for themselves...which in time may ease the burden. Be there to remind them of that.
