97 Exp clutch

97 Exp clutch

When I went to start my 97 Explorer Sport yesterday the clutch would not disengage at all. I would push the clutch pedal to the floor and still hear fluid moving. To me the clutch master cylinder sounded like a worn out shock. The fluid level in the reservoir is at the right level. Is my clutch master cylinder worn out or is the problem somewhere else? Any ideas would be helpful.

Get the better half to push on the clutch while you are down under, check the slave for movement, no movement change master... block the truck before you go down on her.

I replaced the master Sunday and bleed the system and that fixed the problem.

I'm not sure why this problem is not reported more often. I have had constant problems with my master. When under warranty, the dealers mainly chose to ignore my concerns. Twice they changed the slave, pulled the tranny and all, but the lack of clutch disengagment remained. Never once did they change the master though I suggested it everytime I brought it in. Having lived in Dallas and now in Phoenix, I think the summer heat accelerates the seal wear. There are no leaks to the outside but the seal wears internally so the fluid is not moved but slides past the seal upon acctuation. I'm on my 5th or 6th unit now at 175K miles, 1993. I just had to rebuild the tranny so I got a new slave in there as well. Knowing how to bledd the master on the bench, upside down, helps a bunch too and I'm enjoying a very nice manual tranny set up right now (expect it's a ranger tranny and not my Explorer's gearing).
